Another big mountain day was on tap for the peloton, with some classic terrain around Stokesville, Virginia. The ponies were utterly flabbergasted to find the Charlottesville team toeing the line at the Stokesville church this morning. Rumor had it that the boys from Fooftown were waylaid by the opening of a posh new wine bar cum spa near their Charlottesville headquarters. Team leader Marteen Quinn declined to comment, saying only, "I am here now, that is all that should matter to my legions of fans".

 

A rolling parade through the George Washington national forest deposited the ponies at the base of the North River trail for the first timed section. Slimy rocks, mudbogs , multiple creek crossings, and stoopid elevation gain proved no obstacle to these titans of sport, as they cruised over Buck mountain to the hordes of tifosi and sandwiches awaiting them at the finish of the sector.

 

Drew S rocketed off the line with his trademark paranoid aggression, spazing away from the other gc contenders, who had an unspoken agreement to let him twist in the wind, before moving in for the kill. Race leader Fawley soon gapped the lead group, containing Tim, Justin and Drew. He was not to be seen until minutes before the line. Drew and Tim, meanwhile worked feverishly to shut down the gap, to no avail. Podium contender Jimmy Mac, recklessly putting out massive wattage, destroyed his brake rotors in a vain effort to contain his explosive forward momentum. As the lead group approached the bottom of downhill, they caught sight of Fawley, flying through the nettles. Tim Dougherty, in a post race interview said, "I glimpsed him ducking through the trees, like a hairless albino Sasquatch, but I just couldn't catch him".

 

The second timed section was a drag race down the famed Narrowback Ridge, from north end to Secret South. The grouppo stayed compacto as a neutral rollout down the dusty fire road, until the race went live. Elbows were thrown and insults hurled as the top ponies vied for the hole shot. Drew S, Fawley and Justin prevailed, and hit the single first, forcing a separation. Jimmy Mac, with a strong late stage attack reeled in the three leaders entering the Secret South section of trail. He flew by Fawley, and effortlessly passed Drew, before bombing down the sketchy downhill and rocketing down the road for the stage win. Both Drew and Kyle Lawrence flatted on the stage, losing precious minutes to Fawley and Jimmy, who now sit atop the GC. With these vicious reverse attacks, the podium currently stands: Fawley, Jimmy Mac eight minutes back, and Drew S rounding it out. Tim D, craftily waiting in the wings, less than two minutes down. He will need to pull some big moves out on the epic climb up Reddish Knob tomorrow to plant the Cannondale flag on the podium.

Sidenotes:

 

Women's podium contender Churtle le Turtle exited the tour today, leaving the way open for newcomers Misty and Whitney to claim the final podium spot. The Sues' tour experience and mental toughness should ultimately prove too much for these young riders to overcome.

 

When questioned about his GC freefall, former podium contender Kyle Lawrence dejectedly replied "Just call me Tom Petty…"

STAGE 2 RECAP - 2009 Tour d Burg

 

The peloton had an early departure today, due to the evening time trial following the morning's 75 mile road race, exploring the roads of northern Rockingham county, and the southern country roads of Shenandoah County. The riders left downtown Harrisonburg with spectators lined ten deep along main street on their way to the first timed section, over the infamous Hopkins Gap.

 

The first timed section of the day would hold a lot of cards, due to sprint time bonuses awarded at the end of the section. The early pave section did not do much to string out the peloton, but the steep slopes of Hopkins gap quickly separated the bunch into three groups separated by 15 seconds each, which would later regroup on the backside of the gap.

 

The lead group included all the GC players except for Boone rider Drew S, who would be in one of the many small chase groups, desperately trying to limit his losses. The 15 mile, high speed roll out to Fulks Run provided plenty of time for the ponies to jockey for sprint position, but it all came down to tour experience and local knowledge, as Chris Scott claimed top sprint honors and a minute time bonus. The other GC contenders gaining valuable time bonuses were Dirty D and Jimmy Mac, continuing their upward creep into overall contention.

 

After a long parade north, the peloton regrouped at Orkney Springs, to begin the second racing section. Faced with a sheer gravel wall to start the race, the peloton shattered. Two groups formed on top of the gravel ridge, but prior to their cohesion, the route entered tight and sketchy downhill switchbacks, allowing four riders to escape their hard charging rivals. Fawley, Dirty D, Keefer and stage pony Ryan Leech shot free of the chasers, assaulting the downhill with reckless disregard for their or anyone else's safety. Their efforts were all for naught though, as the route was sabotaged by the Virginia State Police, who commandeered director Carpong's aerosol cans,m in compliance with President Obama's newest environmental regulations. In light of these unfortunate events, the section was neutralized, leading many riders to question why they worked so hard. The riders union and tour committee met in secret at the neutral of the Ethiopian Embassy to Chrisscottistan in the hopes of finding an amiable solution. Should an accord not be reached before the start of stage three, the future of the tour is in jeopardy.

 

When the weary peloton finally reached Rocktown, they had nothing but another race waiting for them. The 3.5 mile route featured super tight, technical trails, giant rocks and waterballoons lobed by irate course marshals. Even though the TT lasted less than 16 minutes for winner Dirty D, it still proved vital to the GC, because of large time gaps. Notably, the TT cleared the way for the JV Squad to climb into the top two spots on the GC, as well as solidfy their lock on the coveted DFL, which was handed off to Wild Oates by Mark Veerman, due to medical reasons that his physician would not disclose, due to the delicate nature of the issue. With the squad now bookending the GC, there seems little hope for the rag-tag Cupcake tea, despite their reclamation of the KOM jersey.

Veteran luck at the tour

Shenandoah Mountain Trail

The Tour took to one of the biggest days of racing in its recent history yesterday as the timed section up Camp Georgia Hollow was replaced with a super delux singletrack double hitter. The climb up Braley Pond (Big Ridge), the descent down Bridge Hollow, the climb up Road Hollow, and the boogie on Shenandoah Mountain Trail to the regroup at Confederate Breastworks was smokin sweet.  Tour participants didn't even know that they were riding their bikes on the soon to be famous Great Eastern Trail Bicycle Route.

 

The Parade section from the Breastworks to Benson run was dream town. The Mountain Laurel blooms were still looking delicious, the ferns soft and lovey', and the cat tails were magically tempting.  

 

The competition was awesome. Chas Michaels Michaels melted down like we all knew he would. Fawley had blown him off his wheel on the Benson Run restart which obviously caused Chas to crumble like Hansel's bread crumbs and then get all saucy in his devastated state like Gretel. The real contenders were rocking steady as Drew Scharnister rolled clear Dirty D pushed hard in pursuit with JMacadoodle, JVLawrence, Pokarockitavich and Timmy D rolling clear. The storms that pounded the ridge melted down JVLawrence while Fawley crushed JMacadoodle in the Super D and Dirty D and Timmy D rolled back up to the front displaying their domination on the Shenandoah Mountain Trail.
